The Story of Calc Bowl 2017

Calc Bowl 2017 took off on April 14 at Gateway High School in Aurora. Until the final round it was not clear who the top teams would be. There were 48 teams competing from all over the Denver metro area and beyond; 213 students from 13 high schools.

Thanks to support from Northrop Grumman Corporation, Aurora Public Schools, and many volunteers from Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, UC Denver, and Aurora Public Schools. Thanks also to teachers and parents who supported their students in the Bowl!

The Bowl consists of 350+ challenging calculus questions presented in quiz-show style to the students. For samples, please see the Calc Bowl General Info tab, Practice Problems. Questions are taken from or patterned after AP Calculus exams and in difficulty range from easy to stump-the-Prof.


Calc Bowl 2017 winners were:


1st place and 2017 Calculus Bowl Champions - The TJs, Cole Middle/Senior High School, teacher: Eric Benzel (Denver Public Schools/DSST)

2nd place - Varsity Math, Legend High School, teacher: Cynthia Henderson (Douglas County Schools)

3rd place - Calcaholics, Standley Lake High School, teacher: Sheila Humphreys (Jeffco Public Schools)

Honorable Mention - Alexander the Integrates, Cole Middle/Senior High School, teacher: Eric Benzel (Denver Public Schools/DSST)

Honorable Mention - Berthoud #4, Berthoud High School, teacher: Laurie Brandvold (Thompson School District)


Special awards: Team Spirit: Extremas from William Smith High School (Brooke Stern) and Best Dressed: Slightly Below Average from Standley Lake High School (Sheila Humphreys)
